FAQS

What is veterinary rehabilitation therapy?

Veterinary rehabilitation is a practice of veterinary medicine that promotes the management and treatment of injuries, pathologies, and functional impairments. Veterinary rehabilitation first started in the 1960s and 1970s with horses and has continued to grow. Just like in human physical therapy, the goal of canine rehabilitation is to achieve the highest level of function, independence, and quality of life possible for our patients.

Almost every pet! We treat a variety of diagnoses including pre-operative and post-operative conditions, neurologic and orthopedic dysfunctions, muscle strains or spasms, ligament sprains or tears, dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, arthritis, bursitis, and tendinopathy. We also see highly active pets and competitive athletes for conditioning and core strengthening to help prevent injury. Athletic pets demand a lot from their bodies, and we can help maximize your pet's full athletic potential.

Yes! We want every pet to get the benefits of therapeutic care including our feline patients. As fear-free professionals we strive to create a calming environment for our feline patients so they can receive the pain-relieving care they need in an environment in which they are comfortable. We incorporate low-stress handling techniques and avoid forcing or restraining to make each visit a positive experience.

Absolutely! Your pet’s success is a team effort. Once a pet has been evaluated by our veterinarian and certified rehabilitation practitioner a treatment plan will be made incorporating therapeutic care to be done in our facility as well as exercises and message care you can do at home.

While it’s true that the underwater treadmill is not for everyone, most pets (dogs and cats) take to the underwater treadmill very quickly! The warm water is soothing and fills slowly from below instead of from a faucet or hose. We strive to make it a fun and positive experience with lots of treats and even those that typically do not like water take to the underwater treadmill very well.

Patient care will be under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian certified in rehabilitation therapy and pain management. The pet's primary care DVM will be updated on a regular basis and a summary of findings will be sent after the patient's initial assessment. Once therapy is complete the patient will be discharged back to their primary care DVM.
